Golfers maintain top spot
Ramona High School’s golf team continues to play good golf and good golf teams.
The Dawgs improved their record to 10-2 overall and remain undefeated in Valley League action with a record of 7-0.
Ramona hosted Valley Center High School at San Vicente Golf Resort and was not a very good host. Christian Rajcic picked up his fourth medalist honor by shooting a blistering two under par 34 on the front nine. He beat the Jaguars’ number one, Lyle McIlwain, by four strikes.
Joe Fortunato also shot under par with a one under 35. He beat his counterpart, Paul Calac, by five strokes.
Josh Haynes fired a 39, five strokes better than his counterpart. Drew Massey shot a 41 as he beat his foe by four strokes. James Andrews also shot a 41 and beat his counterpart by five strokes.
Garrett Arnold’s 42 was 10 shots better than the number six at Valley Center, also better than the Jags’ number three, four and five golfers.
The Dawgs finished the week with a road trip to Steele Canyon Golf Course, beating the Cougars by two strokes, 202-204.
Rajcic shared medalist honors with Arnold. Both Bulldogs turned in scores of 39 on the par 36 front nine.
The Bulldogs depth paid off big time in the East County match. All five of the scoring golfers were within three strokes.
Haynes turned in a 40. Massey and Fortunato both shot a very respectable 42. Brandon Barnum turned in a non scoring round of 44 as only the top five scores are used unless there is a tie. Barnum’s 44 would have broken the tie.
During Ramona High’s Spring Break, most of the junior varsity and varsity golfers took time off and relaxed by shooting 18 holes of golf instead of their regular nine holes. In three visits to San Vicente Golf Resort, this reporter saw at least 10 RHS golfers shooting rounds with family and friends. When one JV was jokingly asked where the rest of the team was one afternoon, he said, “They played earlier today. The varsity guys can drive, so they played courses out of town.”
