Bulldog girls sweep Jaguars in swim events
Ramona High School’s girls swim team won all 11 events during a dual meet March 23 at home against Valley Center and then placed 10th among the 31 teams participating in the Mission Viejo Invitational meet March 27.
“They did great,” said Ramona coach Jolyn Yanez.
The Bulldogs defeated Valley Center by a 123-47 score.
Two Ramona swimmers won individual races while posting new CIF meet automatic qualifying times in those events: Gina Lucas won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:26.31 and Katherine Abbott’s time of 5:30.89 took first place in the 500-yard freestyle.
Lucas also won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:04.22, and Abbott also had the fastest time in the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:18.21.
In addition, Breann Stevens won two individual events, taking 26.57 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle and 56.47 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle.
Ellie Carrano’s time of 2:09.97 won the 200-yard freestyle, and Madi Lanz took first in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:02.38.
The 200-yard medley relay team of Lucas, Abbott, Lanz and Brice Maruna posted a winning time of 2:03.17, the 200-yard freestyle relay quartet of Lisse Litka-Baughman, Sydney Davison, Stevens and Taylor Shinnick required 1:51.09 to win their race, and the winning 400-yard freestyle relay squad of Shinnick, Litka-Baughman, Stevens and Carrano consumed 3:51.95 of clock time.
The Mission Viejo Invitational involved preliminaries for the individual events during the morning with the top eight preliminary times in each event advancing to the championship final that afternoon and the next eight times competing in the consolation finals. The relay events were all contested during the afternoon. Six individual Ramona swimmers qualified for the championship or consolation finals.
Ramona’s highest finish was the sixth-place showing of its faster 400-yard freestyle relay team; Carrano, Stevens, Litka-Baughman and Lucas swam the race in 3:46.21. The 200-yard freestyle relay squad of Lanz, Carrano, Stevens, and Litka-Baughman had a 13th-place time of 1:46.67 while Lucas, Abbott, Lanz, and Shinnick swam the 200-yard medley relay in a 17th-place time of 2:01.68.
Litka-Baughman, whose preliminaries time of 1:58.90 in the 200-yard freestyle relegated her to the consolation finals, won the consolation race in 1:57.84 to take ninth place. Because the top eight places are given to the championship finals participants, Lucas finished eighth in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:04.28 while Litka-Baughman’s time of 1:03.96 in the finals, after a preliminaries swim of 1:07.00, constituted 11th place.
Carrano’s time of 57.08 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle gave her 13th place. Two Bulldogs had 16th-place finishes at the Mission Viejo Invitational: Stevens swam the 50-yard freestyle in 25.92 seconds and Lucas took 1:04.78 to swim the 100-yard butterfly.
