Boys swim wins five events vs. Sundevils
The first official dual meet for Ramona High School’s boys swim team took place at Mount Carmel on March 16, and the Bulldogs won five of 12 events against the Sundevils.
The score is in dispute, although any change in points won’t affect Mount Carmel’s win. Ramona won four of the 11 swimming events while sophomore Josh Sammons, who four days later would place second at a diving invitational in Fallbrook, won the diving competition.
“It was a good meet,” said Ramona coach Frank Yturralde. “The boys raced fast. The varsity boys raced very comparable to where they were at the end of the season last year.”
Collin Torsak won two individual events for Ramona, taking 22.91 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle race and 51.10 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle.
Alan Williams won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:00.30. James Oneto’s time of 1:06.25 won the 100-yard breaststroke. Sammons scored 211.45 points on six dives.
Ramona’s losses included the 200-yard freestyle relay, in which Mount Carmel’s winning team completed the race in 1:34.75 while the Bulldogs took 1:34.82.
“We got some great times out of everybody,” Yturralde said.
Ramona, whose team consists of 11 swimmers, took third in a three-way meet March 19 at Grossmont High School which also involved El Camino.
“We held our own. We performed well,” Yturralde said.
Two Ramona swimmers won races: Williams completed the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:55.90 and Torsak had a time of 23.27 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle.
“I’m just really very impressed with their times right now,” Yturralde said.
The Fallbrook Early-Season Invitational diving competition took place March 20 at Fallbrook High School’s pool. Fallbrook senior Chris Knitter won the boys 11-dive event with 349.95 points while Sammons placed second with 347.05 points.
“One dive cost him,” Yturralde said.
