High school golfers win 2, lose 1

The Bulldog golf team was busy and successful last week. The Dawgs shot their best score of the season in a loss to Poway, then picked up a Valley League win over Westview and then finished with a non-league victory over Oceanside.
When asked about losing to Poway after shooting the best score of the season and then not playing well while beating Westview, Coach Jerry Patenaude chuckled and said, “That’s golf.”
The Dawgs lost to Poway at Stoneridge Country Club 194-197. Ramona’s Glendon Barnum shared the medalist honors with Poway’s Louis Alcorn and Max Alcorn. The three golfers shot 37 on the par 36 front nine.
Josh Haynes and Christian Rajcic turned in identical scores of 38. Drew Massey turned in a 39 as Ramona had four golfers shoot in the 30s. Poway also had four shoot in the 30s. Garrett Arnold shot a 45 and James Andrews shot 49.
The Dawgs stayed undefeated in Valley League action at San Vicente Resort with a 206-208 win over Westview.
“We had a couple of golfers put up big scores on a hole or two, but we shot well enough to win,” said Patenaude. “One of our guys shot a nine on a hole.”
Massey shared medalist honors with Westview’s Zach Honor and Brian Williams as all three shot 38 on the par 36 front nine.
The key to Ramona’s win was the tight grouping of Haynes, Arnold, Brandon Barnum and Glendon Barnum. Haynes shot 41, Arnold 42, Brandon Barnum 42 and Glendon Barnum 43. Corey Warren shot 54.
Only the top five scores score. The sixth score is used in case of a tie.
Ramona is 3-1 overall and 3-0 in league play and one of the best teams in the county.
The Dawgs finished the week with a trip to Oceanside Municipal Golf Course and beat the Pirates 207-268.
All six of Ramona’s golfers beat Oceanside’s number one golfer. Haynes picked up the medalist honors with a 38 on the par 36 front nine. Brandon Barnum shot a 39. Massey and Rajcic both fired 43. Andrews shot 44 and Tyler Harvey shot 46.
