Girls lose opening round
Ramona High’s varsity girls basketball team lost to Morse 44-38 in the opening round of CIF Division II playoffs in the Dawg House.
Ramona entered as the eighth seed and Morse was the ninth seed. The seeding committee did their homework. The two teams were evenly matched.
The game changed leads 10 times in the first half and was tied six times. There were six lead changes in the second half and the game was tied three times.
Both teams played very physical defense. Ramona trailed 10-8 after one period of play but put on a full-court press and tied the game at half.
The game was tied at 30 going into the final period and Ramona took a 32-30 lead early in the period. Morse scored 10 straight points before the Lady Dawgs could adjust to the Tiger’s move. Ramona scored four unanswered points to make the score 40-36.
With time running out, Ramona was forced to foul to stop the clock. Salynda Lindsay hit two free throws with four seconds left on the clock to ensure the Tiger victory.
Paige Conroy led Ramona in scoring with 18 points. The sophomore guard also led the defense with five steals.
Kellie Schoepp recorded a double. The senior forward scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and contributed thee assists in her final game as a Lady Bulldog.
RaeAnne Van Tol came off the bench to grab nine rebounds and score 3 points. She also had three assists and two steals.
Tessa Balcom scored 2 points and had two steals. Felisha Stead hit one 3-point shot.
The game was a very physical contest, which was to Morse’s advantage. The Tigers relied on the inside play of 6’3 Abigail Leaupepe-Tele, who scored 23 points and was a physical presence in the paint at both ends of the court.
The Lady Dawgs finished the season with a 16-12 record and as the eighth ranked team in Division II. With Coach Erin O’Connor in her initial year at the helm were her staff, Sarah Spooner and Kylee Harris.
