Cagers lost in first round of playoffs
Ramona’s Bulldogs staged a comeback against the Helix Highlanders in the first round of the CIF Division II boys basketball playoffs but fell short after making it a two-point game with two minutes remaining on the clock.
The Dawgs lost 63-55 and ended the season with a 14-13 record.
Helix started the game strongly and at first it appeared that the game would be a replay of the two teams’ first meeting of the season in the Spartan Classic, which the Highlanders won 64-36. Helix led 17-12 at the end of the first period and led by 12 in the second period before they took a 30-22 lead into the locker room at half.
Ramona came out in the third period and outscored Helix 16-13 in the period and trailed 43-38 going into the final eight minutes. The Dawgs trimmed the lead to 55-53 with two minutes left, but Helix went on an 8-2 run to ensure the win.
Andrew Alcaraz scored a game high 21 points for Ramona and hit four shots from beyond the 3-point line in his final game as a Bulldog. He fouled out in the final period.
Keith Scheib scored 8 points. Josh Leiber hit two 3-point shots for 6 points.
Kwayde Miller came off the bench to score 6 points. Jared Engler scored 6 points before fouling out.
Zach Windes scored 5 points. Bryson Garcia scored 3 points.
The game was marred by fouls that were both called and not called. One Highlander had to leave the game due to two technical fouls. It appears that during the playoffs the officials are letting the players play, which really means letting the players hack. Foul calls were infrequently called in boys and girls games. When fouls are left uncalled, the advantage goes to the bigger and more physical team.
