Bulldog girls soccer ties Knights

Ramona High’s girls soccer team played three league games in five days, losing home matches Jan. 25 against Valley Center and Jan. 29 to Mount Carmel while tying San Marcos on the road Jan. 27.
The Jan. 25 game was rescheduled from Jan. 20, when rains during the week postponed that game as well as the Bulldogs’ Jan. 22 home match against Westview. Since Ramona’s varsity had a bye Jan. 15, when the junior varsity and freshmen squads faced Del Norte, the game against Valley Center was Ramona’s first since a 4-0 home win January 13 over Orange Glen.
The 4-3 loss to Valley Center saw the Jaguars score the tying and winning goals approximately 1-1/2 minutes apart midway in the second half. Valley Center had the first two leads of the game, but each time Silvia Villegas scored a goal to even the match.
One of those goals was unassisted while the other involved a pass from Samantha Schmidt.  Late in the first half Jackie Millwood scored with an assist from Alexis Hogan to give the Bulldogs a 3-2 lead.
The Jaguars’ tying goal followed a cross from the corner and Valley Center’s winning goal was shot from a rebound after Ramona goalkeeper Maria Solis deflected the previous shot.
The match against San Marcos was a scoreless tie; Solis made nine saves while defenders Schmidt, Erika Stinchcomb, Gina Luca and Emily Vandervort helped control the Knights’ offensive attacks.
Ramona’s best offensive opportunity, a shot by Villegas, was headed toward the corner of the goal before the San Marcos goalkeeper made the save.
Mount Carmel’s 4-0 win over the Bulldogs saw the Sundevils score five minutes into the game, add a goal midway in the first half, and take a 3-0 halftime lead after a goal late in the half. In addition to playing their third game in five days, the Bulldog student-athletes also had finals during the week.
Ramona concluded the week with a 3-6-4 overall record, including a forfeit loss which superseded an on-field tie, and a 1-3-2 league mark.
