PeeWees fail to cage Falcons in playoffs
By Gary Johnson
The Junior PeeWee Attack Dawgs entered Pop Warner playoff competition as a huge underdog, but to the surprise of Torrey Pines these Dawgs were more than ready for the challenge.
Just like every other game this season, it was all about defense, and they did not disappoint.
Taking on the high-powered offense of the Torrey Pines Golden Falcons made this one of the hardest fought and well-played defensive games the boys from Ramona had played all year.
After starting the game on defense and holding the Falcons to a 3 and out, the Dawgs turned the ball back over on a special teams miscue, setting Torrey Pines up in the red zone.
The Attack Dawgs once again pinned back their ears and went to work. It was noseguards Nathan Ford and Trevor Forman digging in and not allowing the Falcons a first down and forcing them to give the ball back to Ramona.
This was the story of the game for both of these hard-hitting teams. Every time the Falcons started to move the ball, the Attack Dawgs shut them down by blitzing defensive ends Dawson and Jordan Castro or sending their speedy corners Brandon Setterberg and Noah La Goe from the outside.
So, with the game knotted at 0-0 as time expired in regulation, the game went into sudden death overtime.
Ramona had the ball first, with 4 attempts from the 10 yard line. After two runs up the middle for only a gain of 4 yards, the Dawgs were caught for a loss on a quarterback sweep. This set up a 32-yard field goal attempt by kicker Lucas Lotero, but it was just short.
The Falcons then pounded the middle of the Attack Dawgs defense, running the ball on three straight plays. The third play proved to be the difference in the game, resulting in the only score of the game.
The boys from Ramona would come up just short in the first round of the playoffs, but everyone wished them luck next weekend.
