Junior varsity, frosh football

   Ramona High’s junior varsity football team improved its record to 5-1 on the season and remained atop the Valley League with a 2-0 record as they beat San Marcos at Homecoming 28-14.
   Travis Stevens led the offense as he ran for one touchdown, ran for a point after and passed for two touchdowns. He was four for five passing with 118 yards.
   Coach Jason Matthews’ balanced his offense as the Dawgs ran for 143 yards and passed for 118. Kirk Kaliszewski led the ground attack  with 94 yards on the ground.
   Shane Barnes rushed for 54 yards. Jeremiah Jordan (21 yards) and Eli Jaurequi ( 78 yards)had touchdown catches. Garlan Marshall and Dallas Jansen also had receptions.
   The offensive line (Paul Losk, Nick Fitzpatrick, Preston Johnson, Nich Heimpel, Brandon Barnum, Luke Papps and Captain Andrew Lizowski) opened the holes and gave Stevens time to find his receivers.
  Coach Marc Boykins had praise for the defensive play of linemen, Jake Sanders and Devin Rhodes.
   “Nathan Snyder came off of the bench to earn the defensive player of the game at linebacker,” he said. “Snyder stopped the option game from his position of outside linebacker,” stated coach Brent Harvey.
   The frosh Bullpups lost to San Marcos 30-8. The lone Bullpup TD was set up by a 60-yard kickoff return by Grason Lanz. The excellent field position set up a TD pass from Hunter McHargue to Javier Dominguez. McHargue hit Robbie Farren for the two point conversion.
   Coach Mike Ernst had praise for the play of tight end Jason Kelly. Kelly returned to the lineup after an injury and caught seven passes.
   Ernst also praised the play of defensive end Rhett Henry.
   “He did a good job of containing the option and forcing the  play inside on his side of the field,” said Ernst.
   The frosh are now 1-5 overall and 0-2 in the Valley League.
