Bulldog harriers work on spreads in tri-meet sweep
Ramona High School’s varsity girls and boys won easy victories against Orange Glen in an Oct. 9 cross country meet at Kit Carson Park, as did the junior varsity boys in what was for the junior varsity a tri-meet that included Del Norte.
Ramona Coach Steve Albanese expected victory and focused on running in a pack rather than on times.
“We did really well. It was a very team-oriented race, more of a tempo than an actual race,” Albanese said. “I was very happy with how the team did.”
The first five runners across the finish line in the boys varsity race were all Ramona harriers and had a spread of three seconds between first-place Tanner Perfect and fifth-place Chance Varnardo-Richardson. Max Hughes, Nathan Morgan and Paul Reynolds took the intervening spots. Alec Richardson earned eighth place and Matt Maple finished ninth.
Ramona’s varsity girls took the top seven spots in their race with the top four runners being separated by three seconds.
Ashley Duck was followed by Chelsey Cortez, Lindsey Spieker, Lauren Cortez, Anna Phillips, Caitlin Choi and Erika Stinchcomb.
In the junior varsity boys race, Ramona took the top seven finishes and nine of the top 10. Griffin Gamble, Josh Sears, Donny McKay, Ian Pedlow and Josh Speaker had a split of seven seconds. Forrest Riley and Jose Pilar took sixth and seventh places respectively, Graham Gantzer placed ninth, and Cory Thomas finished 10th.
“It was definitely not an all-out race for any of them,” Albanese said. “It was just a good thing to see the runners coming together as a team.”
Six Bulldogs ran in the junior varsity girls race. Bri Wallace finished fifth, Samantha Jackson placed sixth, Lindsey Millen was the seventh runner across the finish line, Kelly Helman took ninth place, Daniela Cunningham earned tenth place, and Sarah Fabian was the eleventh finisher.
The Bulldogs opened league competition Oct. 2 in a tri-meet against Westview and San Marcos at Discover Lake in San Marcos. The varsity and junior varsity boys each earned two wins while the girls defeated San Marcos but lost to Westview.
The Oct. 9 results give the varsity boys a 3-0 record, the junior varsity boys a 4-0 mark, and the varsity girls a 2-1 statistic.
On Saturday the Bulldogs will travel to Vista for the Southern California Invitational at Guajome Park.
