Design review board says county is not enforcing sign violations

With a light meeting agenda on Sept. 24, the Ramona Design Review Board spent time addressing sign violations after listening to a report from member Reed Settle.
Members discussed a number of businesses in town with sign violations that have not complied with requests to remove or change their signs, and complained about the lack of enforcement by the county. One such violation they talked about was the Kentucky Fried Chicken pole sign with the bucket.
Banner signs were also identified as a problem. Member Carol Close said she has noticed there are banners plastered everywhere in town.
Member Rob Lewallen said banners are only supposed to be displayed for a maximum of 45 days.
Lewallen, who is also chairman of the Ramona Village Design Group, gave a report on the Sept. 17 village design joint meeting with Consultant Howard Blackson.
He said the meeting was well-attended with the majority of members from the two design groups and the Ramona Community Planning Group.  The members voted, almost unanimously, to support the concept of the plan and move forward with it, he noted.
Lewallen said Blackson will be attending the Oct. 8 village design group meeting. He invited review board members to attend.
“We need to keep the ball rolling,” he said. The goal is to have the design plans ready for the county’s general plan update.
During the business portion of the meeting, the design review board approved signage   for Ramona Family Naturals, a new store that will offer organic and natural foods, health and beauty supplements and other merchandise. The business is in the former Ace Hardware store at 642 Main St., and  an Oct. 17 opening is planned, said owner Robert Bradley,.
“We’re getting a great response from the community,” Bradley said.
