Pop Warner Dawg Pack suffers first loss
The Dawg Pack traveled to San Marcos Saturday to take on the San Marcos Barons and came up short, losing 22-12.
On the Barons’ first play, the running back broke free for a gallop toward the endzone. Ramona’s Erik Schmidt saved the touchdown, bringing him down on the seven yard line.
But a few plays later, after seven minutes of play, the Barons’ offense was the first to score this season against the Dawgs. The point after was good, and the score stood at 8-0.
The Dawgs answered back on their next possession. Tyler Vargas took the kickoff down field to give the Dawgs good field position. Adam Paredes, on third down and six, caught a pass for the first down. Sean Stemm continued the drive with a reception, followed by a run into the endzone by quarterback Garrett Binckley. The point after attempt was no good.
With five minutes left in the half, the Barons struck again. The point after kick was blocked by Troy Jordan and the half ended with Ramona down 14-6.
The Dawg Pack returned to the field pumped up and ready to play, and on the first possession Garrett Binkley threw the ball 30 yards downfield to Tyler Vargas, who ran it into the endzone. The point after kick was no good, but the Dawgs, down 14-12, were still in the game.
Raul Briseno interecepted the Barons’ quarterback on the next possession, giving the ball to the Dawgs on the 48. Erik Schmidt continued the drive with a 15 yard run to the 33. But the Barons stopped the Dawgs.
San Marcos’ running game was on fire all afternoon and the Barons scored again with 6:48 left.
The Dawgs kept fighting and came close to another score on what was considered possibly the craziest play of the game. Ramona threw an interception but a crushing tackle by Jeffrey Guthrie caused the Barons player to cough up the ball and Gabriel Plendcio recovered the fumble. But the Dawg Pack couldn’t score.
Next week promises to be a good game as the Ramona Pop Warner Dawg Pack takes on Murrietta at home.
