JV, frosh baseball have championship seasons
Ramona’s junior varsity and freshman baseball teams both had championship seasons.
Coach Mike Ernst’s nine had to rally in the final two weeks to earn an outright championship.
The Dawgs were upset by Valley Center and trailed Westview High School by one game with two weeks left in the season. The Dawgs swept the Westview Wolverines in the showdown for the league title and then swept Oceanside High School to ensure the pennant.
The Dawgs finished 10-2 in Valley League action. Their pitching staff recorded three no-hitters.
Beau Sulser threw a non-league no-no against Steele Canyon and tossed no hitter against league foe Orange Glen.
Jason Snodgrass tossed a no-hitter against Valley Center and finished the season with a microscopic ERA of 1.60.
Nic Skinner led the team in hitting with a .451 batting average. Catcher Josh Benke was the top defensive player.
Mike Scodellero, Casmir Mason, Chris Pilkerton, Kyle McNamara, Jeremy Romeo Brown, Zake Adamos, JD Bengston and Marco Herrera all contributed to the championship season.
Guy Willeford and Chris Bertolero assisted Ernst as coaches.
“It was a great year and the kids were in every game,” said Ernst. “Ramona baseball has a bright future.”
The freshman team also won the Valley League championship. Like the junior varsity, the Bullpups had a 10-2 record in league play.
“We started out 0-8 in cross league play but then we turned it around in the Valley League,” stated Coach Matt Richardson.
Richardson said that the most important game of the season came against Westview High School.
“We had to win to tie them for first place,” said the coach. “Curtis Sullivan pitched a gem. He struck out 15 and tossed a one hitter. It was an incredible pitching performance. Westview lost the last game of the season to Mt. Carmel and finished 9-3. We won the league title outright.”
J.J. Battaglia, Kevin Cardinal, Chris Durham, Andy Garbo, Harrison McGee, Kennan Olson, Kyle Pettey, Ivan Rodriguez, Hunter Rowe, Marco Sanchez, Curtis Sullivan, Michael Talento and Brandon Weiman won the league title under the tutelage of first year coach Matt Richardson.
