Riviera Oaks ladies doubles team wins North County championship
The women’s “BB” tennis doubles team at Riviera Oaks Resort has won the North County Doubles Women’s Conference Championship.
With Teri Bishop as captain and Ninon Oppel as co-captain, the 18-member team fought eight weeks for a spot in the playoffs.
There were five “BB” leagues: two inland and three coastal consisting of a total of 44 teams.
The top two teams in each league earned a spot in the four-week single elimination playoff. Riviera Oaks played Rancho Valencia in the first week, winning 6.4 points to 2.6 points. Riviera Oaks posted the highest score in round one to qualify for a second round bye.
The third week the team played against Palicio Del Mar on their home courts, where Riviera Oaks swept Palicio 9-0.
This earned a home team advantage for Riviera Oaks in the championship game against Del Mar Country Club on April 13. In a match called worthy of the championship, Riviera Oaks beat Del Mar Country Club 5.2 points to 3.8 points.
Twelve weeks, 44 teams and over 800 players later, Ramona’s Riviera Oaks Ladies took the championship title.
“Everyone was awesome to work with and willing to sacrifice in order to have a winning season.” said Bishop.
