Creswell sets school record
Although Ramona High School’s track and field team lost 70-66 at Westview in an April 30 dual meet, Bulldog senior Tyler Creswell set a school record when he won the boys 110-meter hurdles race in 14.53 seconds.
Creswell erased the previous school mark of 14.62 seconds, which was set by Tom Venho in 1980.
“He’s been getting a little bit faster, a little bit faster, a little bit faster, which I think is perfect,” said Coach Bob Verhoest. “That was very encouraging.”
Ramona’s boys won six of the 16 events against the Wolverines.
The two schools split the relay races with Ramona winning the 4×400 and Westview taking first in the 4×100. Ramona’s Ryan Morgan posted a time of 50.00 seconds to win the 400-meter race and Chance Varnardo-Richardson won the 3,200-meter run with a time of 10:12.
The schools split the six field events. Ramona’s Mikey Head won the long jump with a 20 foot distance, Lyndon Scott won the triple jump with a total of 42 feet, and Tyler Jordan cleared 6’4” to win the pole vault.
“It was a hard-fought meet and we did well,” Verhoest said. “We just don’t have the depth in the field events to win the close meets.”
Ramona’s girls won three events against the Wolverines. Kendal Kohlar had a time of 1:02 to take first place in the 400-meter run, Chelsey Cortez won the 3,200-meter run with a time of 11:38, and Erika Stinchcomb’s long jump of 17 feet 2 inches was worth first place.
Kohlar was also one of two Ramona winners at the Dick Wilkins Frosh-Soph Invitational May 2 at El Capitan High School, taking the freshman girls 400-meter race in 1:01.58.
“That’s phenomenal for a freshman girl,” Verhoest said of Kohlar’s time.
Ramona’s other winner at the Frosh-Soph Invitational was Nick Lutu, whose time of 11.60 seconds won the sophomore boys 100-meter dash.
“He was pretty excited about that,” Verhoest said.
Lutu is expected to replace senior Mikey Head on the 4×100 relay team next year.
“He’s looking good and he’s getting stronger,” Verhoest said of Lutu.
The Dick Wilkins Frosh-Soph Invitational also saw Kelly Helman take second in the freshman girls 100-meter hurdle race with a time of 17.81 seconds.
Two Ramona 4×100 relay teams placed fourth at the invitational. Ramona’s freshman girls had a time of 54.20 seconds, and the Bulldog freshman boys completed the relay in 46.81 seconds.
Three Bulldog individuals took fourth-place finishes at the invitational. Amy Jordan posted a time of 2:29 in the girls freshman 800-meter race, Alec Richardson completed the freshman boys 3,200-meter run in 10:31, and Varnardo-Richardson took 10:03 in the sophomore 3,200-meter run.
Ramona’s sophomore boys 4×100 relay team took 46.08 seconds and finished sixth in the race. Lauren Cortez took sixth place in the freshman girls 3,200-meter run with a time of 12:10.
