Boys swim loses league meet to Westview
The North County Conference realignment put Ramona High School’s boys swim team against Westview for a league meet May 1 which saw the Wolverines prevail by a 113-72 score.
“It went well,” said coach Frank Yturralde. “We lost, but it was a very good meet.”
During one point in the meet Ramona trailed by a 34-28 margin.
“We were making a little bit of a comeback,” Yturralde said.
Ramona won three of the twelve events while the Wolverines won five of the nine individual events and all three relay events.
Westview took first and second in the 400-yard freestyle relay to end the meet, earning the Wolverines 12 points for that race compared to only two for the Bulldogs.
James Oneto had two of Ramona’s wins. His time of 2:12.16 in the 200-yard individual medley was his best time of the season for that event. Oneto also won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:06.88.
Ramona’s other winner was Collin Torsak, whose time of 23.64 seconds gave him first place in the 50-yard freestyle race.
“We put our best foot forward and did the best we could,” Yturralde said.
One of Ramona’s second-place finishers at the dual meet was diver Josh Sammons, who placed behind Westview’s Cody Walwick. Sammons and Walwick traveled to Fallbrook High School the following day for a diving invitational. Walwick won the 11-dive event with a score of 383 points while Sammons placed second among the 11 male divers with a score of 357.2 points.
Walwick is a senior. Sammons is a freshman.
“Cody’s degree of difficulty dives are just a little bit higher,” Yturralde said.
Sammons actually led the Fallbrook meet going into the fifth dive before Walwick began executing more difficult dives.
Westview will be in Division I for the CIF meet while Ramona is in Division II.
“Nice thing is Josh doesn’t have to meet him in CIF,” Yturralde said.
The Bulldogs, who fell to 3-2 in Valley League dual meets and 4-3-1 overall for the season, will close out the regular season tomorrow at home against Oceanside.
