Lacrosse team engages in a seesaw contest

The Ramona Bulldogs varsity girls lacrosse team hosted San Marcos High School on April 1 in their first league game of the season at Bulldog Stadium. The match was closely contested in a seesaw battle with the teams ending the first half tied at 2.
San Marcos had to rally to score three late scores to ensure a 5-2 win. The Bulldog defense was tenacious, frustrating the San Marcos attackers numerous times around the goal.
Coach Jim Bliss had praise for Captain Brandi Anthony, who  directed a stingy defense from her point position that had the edge in “ground balls controlled” all evening.
“Attack wing Christina Ramirez sparked the offense with several key passes on the attack and she tallied the first goal of the half finding the net midway through the period,” said Bliss. “Center Jackie Roteck excelled in draw control through the entire game and also scored a goal. Senior Miriam Camacho rounded out the scoring with her first goal of the season. Junior goalie Arisa Sanderson had 11 saves, stopping several breakaways that shifted the momentum to the Bulldogs.”
The junior varsity made school history by winning the first league win in school history. Led by freshman Nicole Darrough’s four goals, Ramona scored its first league victory with a 13-2 win over San Marcos. Captain Alyssa Ross contributed three goals from her attack wing position.
“The Bulldogs showed balanced scoring with two goals each from speedy Kacy Herald and alert attacker Daniela Nunez,” said Bliss. “The scoring was rounded out with goals by center Tiffany Lee and wing Esme Reyes.”
The defense, led by Katie Cobian, Marissa Ybarez and Kaila Michitsch, continued the relentless play of earlier games, allowing the San Marcos defenders few opportunities. Goalie Courtney Robinson stood tall in the cage with seven saves.
After spring break, the Lady Bulldogs were scheduled for a home game against the veteran Valley Center Jaguars on April 15.
