Track and field dominates San Marcos
Ramona High School’s track and field teams all won their Valley League opener March 26 at San Marcos.
The boys varsity, girls varsity, boys junior varsity, and girls junior varsity all prevailed over the Knights.
“Some of our younger kids really stepped up pretty good,” said Coach Bob Verhoest.
Ramona’s girls won all 16 events against the Knights while the Bulldog boys took first in 15 of the 16 contests, falling short only in the 3,200-meter run.
“It was a good day,” Verhoest said.
Freshman Kelly Helman won two varsity girls events, completing the 100-meter hurdles in 18.41 seconds and the 300-meter hurdles in 57.93 seconds. Heidi Jones took first in two field events, throwing the shot put 30 feet 9 inches and the discus 86 feet.
Erika Stinchcomb won both a track event and a field event, taking 27.8 seconds to finish the 200-meter dash and extending the long jump measuring tape to 14’7”.
Three other freshman joined Helman as girls winners. Caitlyn Choy had a time of 13.3 seconds in the 100-meter dash, Kendal Kohlar completed the 400-meter race in 1:04.0, and Lauren Cortez ran the 1,600-meter event in 5:49.
Brittany Balcom won the girls 800-meter run in 2:29, Chelsey Cortez won the 3,200-meter run 11:24 after the starting gun, Cassie Miller was the triple jump winner at 28’1”, Chelsea Maurer cleared 8’6” to win the pole vault, and Shelby Bush had the top high jump distance at 4’8”.
The girls team also won both the 4×100 and 4×400 relays, as did Ramona’s boys team.
On the boys side Lyndon Scott took first place in the long jump at 20’9” and the high jump at 40’4” to win both events. Scott and Andrew Alcaraz both cleared 6’0” for the top heights in the high jump.
Ramona’s other field event winners were Logan Peterson, who threw the discus 134 feet, Justin Goetz, who hurled the shot put 37 feet 4 inches, and Cody Engler, who cleared 11’6” in the pole vault.
Seth Drake won the boys 100-meter dash in 11.0 seconds, Ryan Morgan took first in the 200-meter dash at 22.8 seconds, Matt Laws had a winning time of 52.2 seconds in the 400-meter run, Tanner Jorgenson posted a time of 2:07 to prevail in the 800-meter race, and Paul Reynolds captured first in the 1,600-meter run 4:37 after he left the starting block.
Tyler Creswell won the 110-meter hurdles in 15.5 seconds while Quincy Watts triumphed in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 45.0 seconds.
“Everything looks good so far. It’s a long season, but we started off on a good note,” Verhoest said.
