County declares health emergency

County of San Diego and Imperial County both have proclaimed local
health emergencies. Officials said the proclamations are routine steps
in preparations for addressing an outbreak of swine flu. There are 8
confirmed cases in San Diego County and 5 confirmed cases in Imperial
County
“Proclaiming a public health emergency is routine in situations like
this and done to assist our health professionals in doing their job of
protecting our residents,” said Dianne Jacob, San diego County Board of
Supervisors chairwoman. “We want residents to remain calm and know that
county government is doing everything we can to mitigate the spread of
the swine flu virus. Our health professionals are working around the
clock.”

Bulldogs sweep Mustang Relays distance medleys

Ramona High School’s track team swept the Silver Division distance
medleys at the Mustang Relays at Otay Ranch High School on Saturday.
The Bulldog girls’ win in the distance medley was followed by a win by Ramona’s boys.
“It’s pretty neat to have your distance medley teams go back to back
and win,” said Coach Bob Verhoest.  “That was probably the highlight of
the day.”

Baseball ‘in the thick of Valley League race’

The Ramona Bulldogs stayed in the hunt for the Valley League pennant as
they recorded two league wins on the road over San Marcos and Orange
Glen.
The Dawgs are in control of their own destiny as they will finish their
series with Orange Glen this week. They will then play two non-league
games with San Dieguito Academy and Santana High School before taking
on Valley Center, Westview and Oceanside high schools, the top three
teams in the Valley League.

Softball team wins on road

Ramona picked up a Valley League win at Valley Center High School and lost at home to Westview High School.
The Lady Dawgs are now 6-9 on the year and 2-3 in league play. They
will compete for a spot in the playoffs as the season winds down.
At the beginning of the season, Ally Harvey was the number five pitcher
on the varsity depth chart. Last week she recorded her first complete
game shutout by beating Valley Center 5-0 on the road.

Times have changed for town’s school sports

As a sports writer I get to attend many games, matches and meets at
many facilities. At one time during my tenure, Ramona had the
reputation as having the worst facilities in the conference if not the
CIF (California Interscholastic Federation).
Times have changed for the better. We now have one of the best stadiums
in the CIF. Our baseball field is player friendly but not as spectator
friendly as other ballparks.
It took lawsuits and legal battles, but our softball field is one of the best on-campus facilities in the Valley League.

RHS mermen dominate Knights

Ramona High School’s boys swim team traveled to Palomar College for an
April 24 dual meet with San Marcos and returned with a 120-52 victory
over the Knights.
“I was very happy with the meet,” said Coach Frank Yturralde.
Ramona won 10 of the 11 events with San Marcos prevailing only in the
100-yard freestyle. In two of the individual events the Bulldogs swept
the top three places.

Tennis team wins in scorching heat

The Bulldog tennis team played well in beating Oceanside and losing a tie-breaker to Mt. Carmel in Valley League action.
The Dawgs are 4-9 on the year and 2-7 in league.
Ramona beat Oceanside at Riviera Oaks Resort 17-1 on a day when the temperature on the courts was over 100 degrees.
Ramona’s doubles teams won all nine team points.

Traveling baseball team wins two championships

Ten games, nine wins, seven days and two championship wins.  The Ramona Rattlers had an amazing Spring Break.
Not only did the baseball team wipe out the competition in the Bonita
at the one-day U.S. Traveling Baseball Association Tournament on
Sunday, April 5, by winning 3 of 3, but the team turned around for a
trip to Las Vegas U.S. Specialty Sports Association World Series
qualifier.

Golf team remains undefeated in league

The Bulldog golf team had its busiest week of the season as it remained undefeated in the Valley League.
The Dawgs won two matches outright and tied two matches. They won one
of the ties in a tie breaker and lost a tie on the tie breaker. The
Dawgs finished the week 15-2 overall and are a perfect 9-0 in league
matches.
Ramona’s varsity golf team beat Oceanside High School on the Pirate’s home course 187-232.

Girls swim captures Two Maiden win for 4th year

Ramona High School’s girls swim team won the Two Maiden category at the Ironman Relays for the fourth consecutive year.
Absences at the April 25 meet held at Palomar College forced Ramona
Coach Stacey Dusseault to compete with only five swimmers in the Two
Maiden events, which usually involve eight swimmers.  Lauren Gantzer,
Breann Stevens, and Madi Lanz swam back-to-back events.
“Not only did they swim back-to-back races, but they did it great,” Dusseault said.
