Bulldogs close girls soccer season with tie
Although Ramona High School’s girls soccer team concluded its 2008-09 season with a Valley League record of 3-8-1 and an overall season record of 4-14-2, the Bulldogs ended their season Feb. 19 with a scoreless tie against San Marcos.
“The girls, I think, played probably one of their best games,” said Coach George Garcia. “The girls stepped it up a little bit.”
The Bulldogs preceded their season finale Feb. 17 with a 5-0 loss to Westview, the season’s Valley League champions. The game against San Marcos was also Ramona’s final home game of the season, so the Bulldogs honored their six seniors.
The younger players helped honor the seniors by contributing to Ramona’s second shutout of the season. Freshman goalie Maria Solis and freshman defenders Roxana Gaxiola and Alexa Hogan helped keep the Knights from scoring.
The defense also included Erika Stinchcomb and Bethany Borman, and in the middle of the game the Bulldogs inserted Mackenzie Longworth into the defense, allowing her to complete the season on the field after she missed several previous games due to a foot injury.
While Ramona finished the 2008-09 season sixth among the seven Valley League teams in the conference standings, San Marcos ended league play fourth in the standings.
Ramona returned 10 players from the 2007-08 team.
In addition to the six seniors, the 2008-09 roster had seven juniors, two sophomores, and five freshmen.
“I think we did pretty good considering what we had,” Garcia said. “Next year we hopefully will do a little better.”
Four of those freshmen—Solis, Gaxiola, Hogan, and Samantha Smith—were starters.
“It’s going to make the team, I think, a little stronger next year,” Garcia said.
