Lady cagers tie for second
Coach Dan Marshall’s Lady Bulldogs went on the road to Valley Center and had to hold on to pick up a 45-43 Valley League win.
The Lady Dawgs are now 18-7 overall and are tied with Westview for second place in the Valley League with a 7-3 record.
Linze Cole went to the free throw line with three-tenths of a second left on the clock to shoot her first two free throws of the game. The game was tied at 43 and Valley Center had the momentum.
The senior guard made both shots from the charity stripe and those two points ensured the Lady Bulldog victory.
Ramona shot eight for 16 from the free throw line to Valley Center’s eight for thirteen. Linze Cole hit the two that counted.
Ramona got off to an early lead and led 15-7 at the end of the first period. The Lady Bulldogs increased their lead to 30-21 at half.
“We got cold,” said Assistant Coach Joe Bess. “Nothing we did seemed to work in the second half. They chipped away at our lead and we were cold. They caught us in the final minute. Linze’s free throws saved us.”
Kellie Schoepp and Janet Nasman scored in double figures for the Lady Dawgs. Schoepp scored 12 points and Nasman contributed 10 points.
Chelsea Maurer (5), Kathryn Owens (4), Tessa Balcom (3), Paige Conroy (2) and Felisha Stead (1) also scored in the victory.
The Lady Dawgs will finish their season on Friday night in the Dawg House. It will be Senior Night and the senior players and their parents will be honored before the tipoff against San Marcos.
The Lady Dawgs are in the toughest division in the CIF. Mt. Miguel, Mt. Carmel and West Hills should be the top three seeds in Division II. El Capitan, Ramona and Westview should be the next three seeds.
The winner of Tuesday’s game between Ramona and Westview will have to battle El Capitan for the four seed, which gets a bye and a home game.
