Girls lose to two old basketball foes

The defending varsity girls basketball Valley League Champions got off to a slow start in league play by losing two games on the road as they lost to Mt. Carmel and Oceanside. Both teams are newcomers to the Valley League this season, but old foes.
The three-time defending CIF champion Mt. Carmel took advantage of its home court to beat the Lady Bulldogs 64-58 in the Valley League opener. The game was a rematch of last year’s semi-final CIF game. The next rematch will be in the Dawg House.
“We will have a full gym for the rematch and that should make a difference,” said Coach Dan Marshall.
The difference in the game was the play of Brea Matthews. The Sundevil senior guard had a season high 28 points and 16 rebounds.
“We knew that she was good, but she has not played at that level before,” said Marshall. “Alix Johnson, their other guard, was injured and that gave her more of the court to work with, and she used it to her advantage.”
Another factor in the loss was Ramona’s poor shooting from the charity stripe. The Lady Dawgs only hit 12 of 26 free throws. Mt. Carmel hit 15 of 22 free throws. Those 3 extra points made a difference in a 2-point game.
Marshall had praise for the play of Janet Nasman. The senior low post player recorded a double by scoring 16 points and grabbing 16 rebounds.
“She has been our best player this season, said Marshall. “All aspects of her game have been excellent. She can score, rebound, pass, play defense, and her leadership is a constant.”
Ramona led in the opening minutes of the game. Mt. Carmel took a 5-3 lead in the first period and never relinquished it. Ramona made several runs in the game but could not regain the lead.
Mt. Carmel outscored the Lady Dawgs in the first three periods. Ramona won the fourth quarter and cut The Mount’s lead to 3 points late in the final minutes, but could not take the lead.
Linze Cole (13), Chelsea Maurer (12), and Kellie Schoepp (11) scored in double figures for the Lady Dawgs. Nine of Cole’s points came from behind the arch.
“We didn’t play poorly. They played well and Brea played extremely well,” said Marshall.
Paige Conroy (3) and Kathryn Owens (3) also scored in the game.
The Lady Dawgs lost to Oceanside 46-44 on the road. Ramona opened the game with a blitz as the team ran up a 13-3 lead in the first period and led 17-9 at the end of the period. The Dawgs forced five Oceanside turnovers and took advantage of the the turnovers with eight points.
Oceanside closed the gap in the second period by outscoring Ramona 15-10 as Ramona went into the locker room with a 27-24 lead.
The third quarter was the difference in the game. Oceanside used full court pressure to disrupt the Lady Bulldog offense. The pressure forced 10 turnovers in the period and Oceanside took a 36-32 lead into the final eight minutes.
The Lady Dawgs and Pirates traded leads four times early in the final period. Ramona tied the score with 1:40 left on the clock. The Pirates broke the tie with 1:18 left in the game and held onto the lead for the remainder of the game.
Cole led Ramona with 11 points, two from 3-point land. Schoepp also scored in double figures with 10 points. Schoepp had a big fourth quarter and her overall play kept the Lady Dawgs in the game as she hit a 3-pointer, sunk free throws rebounded and played defense all over the floor.
Paige Conroy (5), Janet Nasman (6), Morgan Gross (4), Chelsea Maurer (4) and Kayla Lawler also scored for the Lady Dawgs.
