Lady cagers enter league action
Ramona High’s Lady Bulldogs, defending Valley League basketball champions, will enter Valley League action with an 11-3 record.
The varsity girls team completed the Mission Bay Tournament by beating University City High School and Fallbrook High School. The Dawgs were tied with two other teams with perfect 4-0 records but opted out of the championship game.
“The game would have been with Oceanside High School and, since we will play them in league play next week (tomorrow), we decided not to play the game and make it easier on the tournament director,” said Coach Dan Marshall.
Janet Nasman was named to the all tournament team. Nasman was a force on the boards and scored in double figures in the tournament.
“Janet is playing very well on offense and defense as we go into league play,” said Marshall. “We have so many girls that are capable of scoring so teams can’t afford to double anybody. That works in Janet’s favor.”
The Lady Dawgs beat University City 61-41. Linze Cole led all scorers with 19 points. She hit four three-point goals.
“She didn’t miss,” said Marshall. “We had an early lead, so I played everybody. She could have scored 30 points.”
Nasman scored 16 points and controlled the boards at both ends of the court. Senior guard Chelsea Maurer also registered in double figures, scoring 12 points.
Ramona’s final game before Valley League play was a little more than a walk-through as the Lady Bulldogs beat Fallbrook 63-16. Eleven Lady Bulldogs scored in the game. Kayla Lawler (11), Nasman (10) and Kathryn Owens (10) all scored in double digits. Morgan Gross (6), Kellie Schoepp (6), Cole (5), Felisha Stead (5), Maurer (4), Tessa Balcom (2), Jessica Beam (2) and Tori Sheppard (2) also scored in the victory.
Ramona scored more points in the first period, 17, than Fallbrook did in the game. The Lady Bulldog defense held the Warriors to 4 points in the first and third periods and 3 points in the second quarter. Fallbrook rallied for 5 points in the final eight minutes.
The Valley League opens this week. Oceanside, Mt. Carmel and Westview have had impressive pre-league records. The Lady Bulldogs have their work cut out. Coach Marshall thinks that they are ready for the task.
